Current UK travel restrictions/guidelines

The past few months have seen a lifting of travel restrictions, but the issue is still a little unclear. If you have any doubts or questions, don’t worry, we are here to help make everything a bit clearer.

Because the list of safe and non-safe countries changes so quickly, we won’t say here which countries are on and which are not. If you need any more information about specific countries, you can check here. Instead, we will break down for you the necessary steps for travelling.

Documents and Tests

If you are fully vaccinated, first you need to reserve and order a Covid test. This must be done before the end of your second day in Britain. Next, complete a passenger locator form. This document is used when you check-in or board your plane or other travel service to Britain. You need to complete this 48 hours before you travel.

Full Vaccinated

What exactly does fully vaccinated mean? First, you are considered fully vaccinated if you have had two jabs by a recognized provider. Second, you need to have this at least 14 days before you arrive in the UK. If your vaccine is from another country to the UK, you will have to provide proof of your vaccination. Read here for a list of approved vaccines.

Not Fully Vaccinated

If you are not fully vaccinated, the rules are similar with some differences. For example, if you ARE fully vaccinated, you must take a Covid test within two days of arriving in the UK. However, if you are only partially vaccinated you must take the same test THREE days before you enter the UK.

Next, book and pay for Day 2 and Day 8 Covid tests. As with the fully vaccinated, you also have to complete a passenger locator form with the same rules (see above).

Not Vaccinated

If you have had neither vaccination, the UK government wants you to quarantine for 10 days. This can be either at your home or the address you are staying at while you are in Britain. Likewise, take your Day 2 and Day 8 tests (see above). Note that you have to take these tests before you travel.

Travelling With Children

If your children arrive in the UK with proof of their vaccination, they do not need to quarantine.

If they under four years of age, no kind of testing is necessary. If the child is between five to 17 years of age, no test is necessary BEFORE they travel, but they must take a test on day 2 or earlier.

Other Exemptions

There are other exemptions, such as travelling from the Isle of Man or the Channel Islands, and medical and work-related exemptions. Check here for more details.

Red List

The number of countries on the Red List is getting smaller by the week, but for an up-to-date list, check here. Currently, all the remaining countries are in Latin America, especially in the upper south to central regions.

Finally

In summary, compared with a year ago, travel restrictions are lifting and the situation is becoming less complicated. It is true that the process of testing is still necessary and so is a vaccine, but the situation has relaxed, and movement is beginning again. No doubt 2022 will see a big increase international movement and studying and tourism will continue.

Hopefully, rather than continue in the old way, we will also see more responsible tourism and more awareness of green issues. Perhaps we will resume our adventures with more understanding of the environment, and of the difficulties we all face.
